Function, refined by time.
Waxed garments were born from necessity. In the harsh waters off Scotland in the 15th century, sailors treated their canvas sails with fish oil and grease to resist wind and rain. What began as a simple maritime solution soon found new purpose: leftover sailcloth was shaped into capes and hats — early forms of weatherproof outerwear designed to endure the elements.

By the mid-19th century, linseed oil replaced fish oil, creating the first generation of oilskin garments. These pieces were effective but stiff and heavy, yet they laid the foundation for modern protection.
In the 1930s, paraffin-waxed cotton marked a turning point — lighter, more breathable, and more durable. A fabric that resisted water without sacrificing movement. It became trusted equipment across industries and was worn during World War II by British armed forces for its protective reliability.
Over time, waxed cotton moved beyond pure utility. It became synonymous with resilience and understated durability — garments designed to be repaired, rewaxed, and worn for years.
Our waxed collection continues this tradition through a Nordic lens.
Designed for shifting weather and everyday movement, each piece balances protection with restraint. The fabric shields against wind and light rain while remaining breathable. With wear, it develops a natural patina — subtle markings that tell the story of where it has been.
Ravnø is moving forward.
As a brand, we continue to expand — exploring new ideas, new materials, and new garments. Not to follow trends, but to refine what we believe good clothing should be: purposeful, durable, and made to be worn for years.
With this new waxed collection, our ambition has been to create something more accessible without compromise. Garments built with the same philosophy as our Ventile pieces: functional design, honest materials, and uncompromising quality.
At the same time, we recognise a reality many people face today. Costs are rising, and well-made clothing often comes with a higher price than it once did. Quality gear is an investment — but it shouldn’t be out of reach.
This collection is our answer.
Garments designed to rival the performance and durability of our Ventile line, while offering a more approachable price point. Pieces made to endure weather, time, and daily use — without sacrificing the standards we believe in.
Because good clothing shouldn’t chase trends. It should simply work — season after season.
Made to last. Made to age. Made to be worn.
